An interesting meeting with the Romney Street Group who in normal circumstances meet at the Athaneum club. The topic, Social Media and where is all going. Some of the material was prepared from my Gresham College lecture (see details in earlier blog posts). Much of the discussion centered around whether existing UK legislation covering telecommunications and publishing was sufficient to deal with the excesses of some of the social media industry. The considered opinion, or maybe I should say immediate opinion, was that it was but then this leads to puzzlement as why successive governments are reluctant to regulate especially when, in the time of Covid, it is evident that the large social media firms have the capacity to censor fake news.
