Gresham College lecture on speech technology

Updated: Jul 8, 2020

Speech technology has gone from a rather niche technology that does not work, to something that is ubiquitous in the previous few years. This lecture gives some insight into the front-end technology but it was also rather fun as it was one of the early demonstrations of Microsoft's auto-captioning system for Powerpoint (it works better now!). You can hear occasional sniggers in the audience as the system selects rather strange versions of my transcript which are acoustically compatible with my speech (but not semantically compatible).

In a way, it is a rather nice illustration of the difficulty of speech recognition -- AI still really struggles with semantic meanings.
